Tuesday Before Thanksgiving

iPod morning commute music: Pink Floyd, Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd, disc 1 (2001)

Just another best of by another really cool band. I have only their early albums, so this set rounds out the collection nicely.

Too busy to really write today. I'm trying to get a bunch of work caught up so that I can relax tomorrow (Nov. 23rd is Japanese Thanksgiving Day, a national holiday) and while I'm in Tokyo from the 24th~27th. Actually, tomorrow will not be relaxed as Kaoru sprained her ankle yesterday at work, so I will be doing the bulk of the Thanksgiving cooking. Hopefully I can get the kids involved as well. Our turkey is just under 10 lbs., a good size for Japanese ovens; ours can handle no more than about 14 lbs.

I'll try to post tomorrow and Thursday before I leave for Tokyo. I'll be without Internet until I return on Sunday.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving!

You're probably preparing by now. Our turkey is small by US standards--just over 13 lbs., but it's only for 3. Ken and I have only my mom as company this year. I love turkey leftovers, so this should afford enough turkey sandwiches to keep both Ken and I happy, as well as to give some to Mom to take home.

In keeping with our diet, I made sugarfree cranberry sauce last night. Actually, it isn't bad. Tomorrow, I'll make sugarfree/low fat pumpkin pie. I draw the line at the South Beach Diet's suggestion for mashed potatoes (pureed cooked cauliflower--yuck!), but I figure that as long as we are relatively careful, we can breeze through the holidays maintaining the diet for the most part.

Happy cooking. It's time your kids learned to cook a turkey dinner. Crack the whip! hehehe

We actually tried the fake mashed potatoes once, and they really were edible. However, they weren't that good. Let me know how the pie turns out. Mine is full of bad stuff...ooh, I just took it out of the oven. It does smell good. Susan, I admire you and Ken for fortitude. Forgive me my lack thereof. Today will be a fattening day.

One of the cool things about holidays is using recipies passed down through the generations. I guess usually they go from mother to daughter. Do you (when not being so good on the South Beach Diet) cook recipies handed down from your mother, or do you also cook recipies from Ken's side of the family? I guess it's not surprising that special American holiday foods are handed down from my side of the family, and those came from my mother's side (examples: the pumpkin pie, Christmas cookies, and birthday cake).

I hope you check back to see my replies to you comments. I assume that you do or I wouldn't post them.

Our family's piemaking was passed down from my maternal grandmother straight to me. My mother hates to make pies, and so does my sister. However, there are family pictures of me with my grandmother when I was only about 3 with a child-sized rolling pin helping with the pies. Grandma used to help me make a child-sized pie in a small tin, while she made the big pies. Later, it was the tradition for Grandma to make the crust and for me to make the filling for the pumpkin pies. Grandma died almost 30 years ago, so for a long time, I was the sole holiday piemaker. When Meredith was about 9 or 10, we went to a pastry making workshop together. After that, we began to make the pies together, as Grandma and I had done earlier, only now, I do pastry and Mer does the filling. This year, however, Mer is on her lonesome in Portland, so I'm stuck doing the pies by myself.

As for the diet, I know that this holiday season there will be a lot of temptations that will not only pass our way, but temptations that we will say, "YES!" to resoundingly. So, Ken and I decided to try to do what we can, so that we don't have to feel too guilty about the temptations. I won't make fudge this year, but will make Christmas cookies. I will probably make our family's version of Chex Mix called Nuts and Bolts. Boy, is THAT a hard one to resist! We will probably go back on phase one for at least a week after the holidays, and then get back to the more normal phase two. I've lot about 18 lbs. since Labor Day. Ken is down at least a size.
